It is simply the emotions of the story that continue to make it popular in English Literature even today. So the reader feels more emotions of suspense and some hatred towards the foolish knight who drew his sword at the wrong time. Since the reader knows that both King Arthur and Sir Modred are tense about the meeting we are aware of the grimness that the naked sword drawn to kill the snake will lead to. The meeting seems to be going well until one of the men receives a bite from a small snake and another soldier draws his sword to kill it which causes all hell breaks loose. When King Arthur goes out with courage to face Sir Mordred and sign the treaty in order to confirm the safety of himself and his devoted followers, people are somewhat relieved.
